North, east or south-east? How Zanzibar’s beaches differ — and how far each is from the airport.
North: Nungwi and Kendwa
The northern tip has some of the least tidal beaches on the island, so swimming is possible for more of the day, and the sunsets are excellent. Nungwi is ≈ 65 km (≈ 1 h 30 min) from the airport; Kendwa ≈ 62 km.
East coast: Matemwe, Kiwengwa and Pongwe
Long, reef-protected beaches with a strong tidal range — at low tide the sea retreats a long way. Matemwe is the closest beach to Mnemba Atoll. Kiwengwa is ≈ 45 km (≈ 50 min) from the airport.
South-east: Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu and Michamvi
Wide, shallow lagoons, a relaxed village atmosphere and the island’s kite-surfing centre at Paje. Michamvi, on the Chwaka Bay side, is known for sunset views. Paje and Bwejuu are ≈ 50 km (≈ 1 h) from the airport.
